In the United States, we live in a democracy.

This means that every adult should have a voice in how our country is run.

In our democracy, you have the right to Freedom of Speech.

This is called The First Amendment.

• The freedom not to speak(specifically, the right not to salute the flag).
• To use certain offensive words and phrases to convey political messages.
• To contribute money (under certain circumstances) to political campaigns.
• To engage in symbolic speech, (e.g., burning the flag in protest).

In simpler terms, you can't get in big trouble for saying you prefer the color red over the color blue,

Or if you prefer one superhero over another.

The press is a nickname for journalists.

This freedom allows for the news to report on everything, both good and bad.

In a democracy, sometimes powerful people or groups don't do the right thing.

It's up to journalists to check in and report on unusual things that are happening.

They want to make sure you and I live in a fair, safe country.
